Stockholm Through the Eyes of a Local: Exploring Your City as a Tourist

Sweden’s capital city is one of the most visited in Europe accounting for 3 million overnight stays in 2024. Visitors are attracted to the city because of its rich history, iconic landmarks, stunning island cityscape, world-class museums, and green spaces, to name some. For the more than 2.5 million inhabitants who call it home, Stockholm offers an exciting opportunity to rediscover the city and create an enriching adventure right outside their doors.

Revisit the Old Town

There are many epic travel destinations around the world that offer a once-in-a lifetime experience that goes beyond typical sightseeing. Whether it’s breathtaking natural beauty, sense of adventure, or profound cultural experience, these places are unforgettable and extraordinary. The good news is experiences like these can also start at home. For example, most locals are likely to rush past Gamla Stan, the city’s old town, with nothing but a cursory glance at its cobblestone lanes or gilded buildings. After all, when one is in a hurry to go somewhere, distractions are not helpful as the goal is to reach the destination as quickly as possible. However, if you pause for a moment or just slow down, you will notice all the details. Walk down the Main Square or Stortoget and admire the colorful merchant houses. Visit the Royal Palace, one of Europe’s largest and the official residence of the Swedish monarch. Contemplate at the Stockholm Cathedral or visit the Riddarholmen Church, the city’s only preserved medieval monastic church. Take a look at intricate carvings above a doorway or listen to the echo of footsteps in a medieval alley – the silence of history is present from every side. Suddenly, it’s not merely a tourist attraction, it’s like a portal taking you to another time.

Ride the Archipelago Ferries

Getting aboard ferries is not merely a way to get to and from the islands, it is also like riding through a ‘living’ postcard. As the boat glides across the Baltic waters, pause for a moment and take in the beauty of the changing panorama of landscapes and light. Look at the rugged, windswept rocks, forested islands, and charming wooden cottages dotting the shores. Spot notable red cottages with white trim which are classic Swedish summer homes. Many feature private docks for small boats. Admire life on the water with sailboats, kayaks, fishing boats, and luxury yachts dotting the horizon. You’ll see people sunbathing, fishing, or just relaxing peacefully. Depending on the season, you might spot gulls, herons, cormorants, and even seals. Beyond the superb nature and wildlife, you’ll also see ancient fortresses and old lighthouses still standing to this day. Finally, don’t miss spectacular sky shows whether it’s the crisp blue light of a glorious summer morning or the golden glow of a sunset. Even a soft fog that rises from the water enshrouds the islands in mystery.

Discover Hidden Gems

While Gamla Stan and the Royal Palace are truly fantastic sights, there are also little-known jewels in the city. Take Rosendal Garden located on Djurgarden island. The farm or garden is a peaceful oasis made up of charming orchards and lush greenhouses making it a true escape from the bustle of the city. Visit the plant shop or enjoy tasty organic food and pastries from their bakery and café.

At the Woodland Cemetery, you’ll see the seamless blend of architecture and nature. Designed by distinguished Swedish architects, Asplund and Lewerentz, the UNESCO World Heritage site is more than a burial ground. The buildings and burial sites are impeccably integrated into the landscape of pine forests and rolling hills, a harmonious environment that promotes reflection and a sense of continuity after death. Notable sites include the Woodland Crematorium with its 3 chapels, the Tall Granite Cross, and the Chapel of the Resurrection.

Out of the city center, head to the Snösatra Graffiti Wall of Fame and admire the impressive street art. The massive and legal graffiti walls are always updated with new art at the Spring Beast Festival, and visitors can enjoy a truly evolving outdoor gallery.

Also don’t miss the Army Museum which isn’t only about military history. This carefully curated museum in the Östermalm District features the stories of the Swedish people in war and in peace. It offers excellent storytelling and immersive displays covering 500 years of Swedish military history keeping its visitors engaged and enthused.

The beauty of Stockholm never ceases to amaze from its historic buildings to its scenic waterfronts. As a local, there’s always something new to discover or revisit whether it’s an exhibit or a quaint neighborhood in the place one calls home.
