December is just around the corner and the countdown of Advent will get underway, so now’s the time to bundle up in your warmest winter coat and stroll through the cheerfully lit Christmas markets in Stockholm with a warm mug of glögg. 

The holiday season has officially begun here in Sweden and there’s no better place to stock up on uniquely Swedish Christmas gifts than at one of Stockholm’s traditional julmarknader, Christmas markets. Stortorget Christmas Market in Gamla Stan

November 23rd to December 23rd, 11am to 6pm daily.

The oldest Christmas market in Stockholm made up of traditional wooden stalls selling warm spicy glögg, pastries, jewellery  Christmas knick-knacks, smoked sausages, and cured reindeer and elk meat. The outdoor traditional market is located in Stortorget Square near the Royal Palace.

Skansen Christmas Market

Every Saturday and Sunday from November 30th to December 22nd from 10am to 4pm.

This Christmas Market – 110 years old this year – is situated in the open-air museum of Skansen in central Stockholm, where cosy stalls are filled with local crafts and homemade goods and preserves like jams, mustard and a variety of baked goods and sweets. The market is located at the Bollnäs Square and in the Town Quarter. Children’s activities include pony rides, Christmas tales, and sing-alongs by the fire. Skansen has many other Christmas activities in addition to the market taking place from November 24th through January 6th.

Entrance Fee: 120 SEK for adults, 60 SEK for children 6-15, 100 SEK for senior citizens.

Kungsträdgårdens Christmas Market

29th November – 22nd December, 11am-6pm

Kungsträdgården’s Christmas Market celebrates its 17th year. You are offered everything from textiles and wooden handicrafts, delicacies from the forest and sea and warm clothes. You’ll certainly find a gift for your loved ones.Nobody needs to go hungry from Kungsträdgården when there are lots of good things to eat!

Färgfabriken Christmas Market

Saturday/Sunday 7-8 dec and Saturday/Sunday 14-15 between  11 and 4pm

The Färgfabriken Café and Designmarknad Sthlm invite us to a design market with a Christmas twist. Here you’ll find everything from clothes to accessories to interior design and furniture. Organizers promise a lot of fun with brunch, bars, DJs, food trucks and live music…

Drottningholm Christmas Market

December 7th-8th, 11am-4pm

On the second weekend of December you can stroll through the palace grounds, and peruse the warmly lit market set up in the area. The market stalls tout hand crafted goods made from local wood carvers, blacksmiths, and various Swedish craftsmen. The Christmas Market is located in the Court yard. Guided tours of the palace grounds at 12pm and 2pm. Special family guided tour on Sunday at 1pm for children.

Steninge Slott Christmas Market

November 16th – December 23rd

Monday to Friday 11am to 6pm

Saturday to Sunday 10am to 5pm

This is a covered Christmas market located in the Steninge castle, near Sigtuna and Märsta with stalls set up by local merchants, artists, and small businesses. You can enjoy the castle ground but unfortunately the castle is closed for renovations so you can’t tour the inside of the castle this year. However, you can also reserve a Christmas dinner at the castle during your visit by emailing [email protected] in advance.

Sigtuna Christmas Market

24th November to 22nd December. Open on Sundays only:  11am to 4pm

This market is particularly special for being located in the oldest town in Sweden, dating back to 980 AD. Here you can find Christmas delicacies and locally made handicrafts. In addition to the Christmas market, there is live music, Lucia celebrations, and visits from Santa. On November 24th, see the crowning of the Sigtuna Lucia candidates. On December 1st and 8th, children can meet Santa and write their wish lists on the Drake farm. The Christmas Market can be found all along the main street and in the Main Square and Little Square. Parking is free during the market hours and restaurants will be open during the same hours.

Train: Stockholm – Märsta commuter train for 35 minutes. Bus 570 or 575 from Märsta station to Sigtuna.

Royal Mews Christmas Fair

November 29th (12pm-7pm), November 30th (10am-6pm), & December 1st (10am-5pm)

Enjoy the traditional Christmas markets selling handicrafts and Swedish delicacies in a unique environment. The Royal Mews is responsible for the transportation of the Royal Court, both by car and by horse and carriage. In addition to the market, you can explore the Royal Mews buildings, stables, and see the horses and carriages.

Rosendals Julmarknad

Friday November 29 to Sunday December 22, Tuesday – Sunday 11-16

Organizers promise the best organic gingerbread dough, warm spiced cider from the Rosendal garden’s own apples, Christmas roses and traditional blooms, an open fire in the yard to warm revellers from the winter chill. Rosendal garden dresses up in its traditional Christmas garb with the beautiful winter garden as a backdrop.
