Recipe of the week: Madison Park Burgers

To celebrate US Independence Day in July, the YLC’s expat cookbook goes stateside! This month we turn to the Big Apple and the New Jersey area for inspiration and get help from a real expert – our own Amy Johansson!

To the outside world, Madison Park is an unknown park, but to people who are familar with Manhattan below Midtown, it is a lovely park on the east side separating Gramercy Park from Midtown. It has a lot of character and is always full of workers, SVA students and glam socialites during nice weather at lunch time.

Though the park now has been recognized a bit more than it has been in the past thanks in part to Sex and the City (it now has a Shake Shack stand and a new playground), it used to have a humble food truck (before food trucks were all the rage in New York City) that served heavenly honest burgers to lunch-goers for a modest price. Here is a simple recipe that approximates these delicious burgers:

What you’ll need:

1 head of garlic (the fresh kind is best) mashed or minced

2 dl white wine

1 dl olive oil

1 kg ground beef (nötfärs not blandfärs)

What to do:

Form hamburger patties from the meat, and place them in a baking dish. Whisk together the rest of the ingredients in a bowl and pour the mixture evenly over the burger patties. Cover the burgers and place them back in the refrigerator to marinate for at least 1 hour (longer is better) making sure to turn the patties so that the marinade seeps into every juicy pore.

Grill or fry the burgers over high heat, approximately 4 minutes per side.

Serve on toasted buns for full effect.

Enjoy!
