WHAT’S ON STOCKHOLM: November 2019

November is that time of the year many regard as dark, but funnily enough, Stockholm gives us many sparkly and enlightened ways to have fun and keep our minds away from the gloomy weather conditions. Such as the Stockholm Film Festivals, where stars of the movie world shine on the red carpets of the city’s cinemas and the light of the projectors on the screens takes us to worlds we have only dreamed of. Stockholm itself also starts glittering, when the streets are dressed with the Christmas decorations. No, this is not a dark time, it’s a time to see the light in different shapes.

Here are some of the glittering events you should not miss this month!

SEASONAL CELEBRATIONS

Lighting of the Christmas lights in Stockholm City

Everybody is welcomed to this year’s opening of #Stockholmsjul with the launch of the Christmas lights in Stockholm City 2019.

In addition to the launch of one million LED lights on over 40 streets, places and squares, the city will offer wonderful Christmas atmosphere. Do not miss the premiere walk of this year’s Christmas lights!

Christmas Market at Skansen

The Christmas market at Skansen has been a yearly tradition since 1903. The market square is filled with food, treats and decorations and the bonfires are lit. All the historical houses and farmsteads are decorated and in the town quarters you can meet skilled craftsmen. There will be craft demonstrations and live music in the buildings where the tables are also set for Christmas dinner. Young and old can participate in dancing around the Christmas tree and make their own Christmas decorations in the workshop.

30th Stockholm International Film Festival

Between the 6th and the 17th of November, the 2019 Stockholm International Film Festival screens around 150 films from over 60 countries in the city’s cinemas and arranges quizzes, parties, seminars, Face2Face and more.

We have put together a guide with the films that are a MUST SEE at this year’s festival, including the best of the best from every film genre and you can find it here.

Opening Reception: Love Lundell & C-print

This autumn Love Lundell will present a new series of works in the exhibition Sentimentally Yours, Red Forest at Wetterling Galllery. The series is about times of transition, the period between childhood and adulthood. Memories of sexual awakening and places connected to these memories. Or the emotion of being trapped in this stage of transition.

    Stockholms Kulturfestival - Stockholm Culture Festival

    Stockholm Culture Festival  is an annual cultural festival in Stockholm, conducted by the Cultural Department on behalf of the City. The festival has offered more than 600 program items annually and had 750,000 visits in 2017 along with the youth section of it We Are Stockholm.

     

    The festival takes place in downtown Stockholm, the venues are Gustav Adolf Square, Charles XII’s Square (dance floor), Skeppsbron, Jacob’s Church and the family area on Norrbro. The program has a broad impact and includes everything from world music, jazz, opera, classical, pop, rock, activities for children / family, talks, street art, theater, city tours, art, dance, photography and international performances.

    All of the Culture Festival events are free with the exception of the “walks” – guided city tours with a variety of themes.

    Fools Gold 2018 - Music Festival

    Fools Gold is Stockholm’s new festival and market for independent labels.

    The first festival will take place in Tantolunden on August 18th. Acts from some of the most groovy Swedish indie labels around will perform live and even more groovy labels will sell their vinyls throughout the day.

    2018 offers music and records from PNKSLM Recordings, Lazy Octopus, Rama Lama Records, Birds Records, Adrian Recordings, Hybris, Strangers Candy, Welfare Sounds, Novoton, Rundgång Rekords, Startracks, Maternal Voice, Kollektivet Records and Youth Recordings.

    The event is free and suitable for all ages, Fools Gold 2018 is made possible through support from Stockholm city, Kulturrådet and Svensk Live.

    Fools Gold is a long-term project with ambitions and dreams to grow bigger and better, in order to do so we need all the support we can get.     Nytorget Festival

    17 -19 August is the time for Södermalm’s biggest folk party:
    -Nytorgsfesten-

    A three day festival filled with spectacles and noise in the heart of Söder.
    There will be carnival trains, live music, DJs, market streets, fun fair, food trucks, flea market, art shows, midnight race and more.

    Nytorgfesten is a festival for the whole family and with free entrance in all areas and all days. Activity and game schedule is announced on a regular basis.

     

    In mid-August, in connection with the midnight race, the Södermalm Music Association organizes Nytorgsfesten 2018.

    The Nytorg festival was organized for the first time 1995 – 1997 at Nytorget with over 25,000 visitors , it then moved to Riddarholmen 2001 – 2004 and then Skeppsholmen 2011.

     

    And now it’s back at Nytorget and this year the festival has expanded its area to Parkteatern in Vitabergsparken and Blecktornsparken. Everywhere you will be delighted to music, food experiences, flea market, art, yoga, fun fair and more.

     

    New for this year is also the collaboration with the immeasurably popular photography exhibition, Planket STHLM

    The Prinsess Mononoke - Summer outdoor cinema

    Stockholm Film Festival, together with the year’s most prestigious E.ON, invites you to Sommarbio in Rålis! Starting from 18:00 with various activities and the film is shown at approx. 21:00.

    Enjoy Miyazaki’s epic adventure of Princess Mononoke. The film unfolds in a fantasy version of feudal Japan and is a dark, violent yet beautiful story about the growing conflict between man and nature. When the movie was released, it was hailed as an animated masterpiece and the story is still as captivating and current.
