Pub Review: Oliver Twist

In our latest installment of Dining Out Hotspots in Stockholm we review the English pub Oliver Twist in Södermalm.

Oliver Twist in Stockholm:

Atmosphere – Located in the Södermalm area of Stockholm, Oliver Twist is a great beer bar that is just as good as it’s popular sister bar Akkurat. Oliver Twist, or “O.T.”, is considered an English style pub, with an American vibe.

The dining area is long and narrow causing it to pack up pretty quickly on the weekends with regulars and other beer lovers. A well-stocked bar is the first thing you see when you come through the doors, with several taps and a wall of refrigerators full of beer behind the bartenders. The majority of the bottled beers they offer are on display on a shelf above the bar and the tap specials are listed on chalk boards.

Separate from the bar is the dining area which is tucked in the back to give a bit more privacy diners. The ceiling is strung with various flags and banners and the dark wood covered walls are adorned with beer signs and coasters. Special events have been held for rare beers that are brought in, such as the ‘Hello, My Name Is Ingrid’ beer to which Darren Packman, the brewer himself attended. Bartenders are friendly; know their beer, and how to properly serve the different brews.

Food – In keeping with the bars spirit, some of the menu selections have an American influence. For example, the Bourbon BBQ Burger topped with a couple of slices of bacon and blue cheese dressing or try the Confit Pork served with cabbage and potatoes. If you are feeling up to it, try the 200g steak (that’s almost 6oz for you yanks) with a side of fries. On the healthier side there is a Crunchy Chicken Burger topped with red onion, tomato and a chilli dressing, a Veggie Burger with sunflowers seeds and fries, or a salad with your choice of salmon, chicken or halloumi. However, the most unique dish on the menu is the Swedish Tapas plate for only 55kr, order three and its 139kr total. Oliver Twist has a lunch menu that changes week by week. You can check their website to see what is available.

Drink – Oliver Twist also carries spirits, liquor, wine and a nice assortment of aged whiskey, but what you really come here for is the beer. Ales, lagers, porters and stouts are brought in from around the world. What sets this bar apart is that they import and carry a wider selection of U.S. microbrews than any other beer bar in Stockholm. If you haven’t had the chance to sample the variety of beer types the US produces or if you are an home-sick American, this is the place to check out. You can find beers from Stone Brewing Company, Rouge, Dogfish Head, and even cans of Dale’s Pale Ale, plus so much more.

Note: The taps are on a rotating basis but you can check the website or follow them on Facebook to see what is coming in.
