The Best Places To Cycle In Stockholm

While many people enjoy cycling for leisure, Swedes see it as a form of everyday transportation. In fact, Swedes bike an average of 5.3 million kilometers every day (collectively). With a highly developed bike path system that covers most of the city, Stockholm gives you the option to cycle for both “business” and pleasure. Since not all biking trails are equal though, we’ve compiled some of the best places to bike around the city.

Karlavägen

This is a prime strip of real estate and is actually one of the longest streets in Stockholm. The wide tree-lined path runs down the middle and provides ample room to bike through the area. If you follow the street all the way to the end, you’ll end up in Gärdet, with its wide open spaces. You’ll feel like you’re in the middle of the country and may even see some deer. This is a great spot to bike that’s easy to access and also has beautiful views.

Lidingö

If you’re looking for a day of leisure, then look no further than Lidingö. Here, you’ll find a new and old bridge. While the new one was built to carry cars, the old one was left in place and given to cyclists and walkers for recreational use. When you get to the trail, you’ll see a clearly marked bike path that splits into many options to take you all over the island. You can cycle over the bridge and spend as much time as you want exploring the island. This can take a fair amount of time so be sure to pack water and a lunch to get a day out of the excursion.

Hagaparken

Located just north of the city, this is a massive green space which attracts city dwellers throughout the year. Bike to the Copper Tent and then carry on finding your way around the lake and through the forests. The paths here are well-maintained and you can take your own pace as you ride leisurely through the area. If you’re not much of a biker, then you may want to consider using an electric bike as this may be easier for you. The best electric bike reviews indicate that they’re great for the avid biker and can help to avoid fatigue, so consider this if you may need some extra help.

Djurgården

This area is home to some of the top attractions in Stockholm, like Skansen, Gröna Lund and the Vasa Museum, but that’s only part of the story. This island oasis is in the center of the city and has been given over to nature. With canals and winding paths, you can immerse yourself in the area. While you can plan out your trip, it’s recommended that you simply pick a path and then go. You can choose some attractions to see while you’re there as well.

Finally, know that when you’re in Stockholm, there are a huge number of bike trails and it’s hard to go wrong with any of them. If you want to enjoy a scenic path, choose one of these options. However, regardless of which one you choose, you’ll be sure to have a good time.
