The Laughter of Recognition

Most people think therapy is all tears and tissues — not laughter. Sure, sometimes you laugh in a dark, self-deprecating kind of way, but it’s rare that joy fills the room.

Back when I was running the Turning Point counselling centre, I kept hearing bursts of laughter coming from the office next door. Actual, belly-deep laughter. I got curious and finally asked my colleague what was going on.

Turns out, she was studying something called Human Design — a blend of astrology, psychology, and genetics that helps people explore their emotional and energetic blueprint. Basically, it’s like having a map of who you are underneath all the conditioning, people-pleasing, and defence mechanisms that life piles on.

As a therapist, that blew my mind. Most approaches — from psychoanalysis to Gestalt — assume there’s a “real you” hiding under layers of stuff. But the search can feel like wandering in the dark. What if you had a map instead of just a flashlight?

That’s what drew me in.

For the past twenty years, I’ve continued my work as a counsellor and psychotherapist and for open-minded clients, I’ve added insights from their personal blueprints. Their reactions say it all:

“It’s like seeing myself on paper.”

And sometimes, in those moments of recognition, laughter bubbles up again. The kind that says, “Oh wow… that’s me.”

But like anything, Human Design can get a bit too “this is the truth.” Even its founder warned against that. He told people to experiment, not worship the system.

That spirit of curiosity inspired me to develop my own approach — one that blends therapy, psychology, and this deeper self-mapping. I call it Star Psychology.

It’s for people who want transformation without years of over-analyzing. It helps you see your patterns clearly, cut through the noise, and grow — creatively, consciously, and on your own terms.

With Star Psychology, you get a kind of map of your inner world including the main archetypes that influence the way you think and act. It shows how your mind and emotions work, the best way to make decisions based on your chart, and why comparing yourself to others is honestly just self-sabotage.

We’re moving from a world obsessed with fitting in to one that celebrates what makes us different. I call it unity in diversity — where each of us plays our part, not by blending in, but by shining in our own way. Every week we will publish the profile of one of the 64 archetypes or persona that describe the great diversity of our inner world. So keep an eye out for the weekly Star Player report.

If you’re curious about your own blueprint, check out my website for a sample report or podcast episode. You’re welcome to join me in exploring this creative, grounded, and maybe even laughter-filled path of self-discovery.
