Chelas – There’s a New Mexican in Town

Located at the trendy Hornstull neighbourhood of Södermalm, at Verkstadsgatan 4,  you’ll find Chelas, Stockholm’s newest Mexican restaurant. Chelas opened its doors in July of 2019. The name comes from the Mexican slang word for beers and a phrase the Mexicans use when they want to socialise with friends and family: “Saca las chelas”. Literally translated it means “Bring out the beers”, but it can actually be better interpreted as “Let’s have some beers and hang out”.

Unique Stockholm Restaurants With A Great Wine List

The wine culture in Sweden is expanding, especially with the increase of vineyards in Skåne in the south of the country. In fact, 42% of all alcohol sales in Sweden consist of wine, and this is very different from brännvin, the traditional Swedish drink that translates as burn-wine. You can of course buy wine from the state owned Systembolaget. However, the only other place that you can buy wine and enjoy a glass is in licenced restaurants and bars that serve food. There are some great restaurants in Stockholm that unite their food and wine menu in perfect harmony, taking equal consideration to both.

    K.Flay Stockholm

Two times Grammy-nominated K.Flay, who was most recently in Sweden when she opened for Imagine Dragons on a packed Globe, is going on tour!

Raw, rebellious, energetic and absolutely fantastic – it’s a pretty reasonable summary of K.Flay and her genre-transcending music. K.Flay is both singer and songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, when K.Flay debuted it was with a rap mixtape in 2004. Her success on the rap scene was unexpectedly immediate, and after a number of mixtapes K.Flay began to understand that music was her calling. While moving around the United States (from Chicago via San Fransisco to Brooklyn), she experimented with her music style, landing in a rocky indie hip hop that few other artists can handle.

Her hard-to-define – but still fantastic – music is as much rock as hip-hop and indie and has, paradoxically, shared a stage with artists like Snoop Dogg and Passion Pit. The latest album “Every Where is Some Where” (2017) featured several mega songs, including “High Enough” and the Grammy-nominated single “Blood in the Cut”.

At the beginning of the year she released a new single, “Bad Vibes”, during the summer came the new album “SOLUTIONS”.

Everything started as a one-off event when the singer and producer Viktoria Tocca set up “From Broadway to Duvemåla” at the Berwaldhallen in Stockholm in the spring of 2016 – now the performance goes into its eighth season. After playing for sold out houses around Sweden for four years.

Opening Reception: Love Lundell & C-print

    Opening Reception, November 7, 6 – 8 PM

    WG.102
    Love Lundell
    Sentimentally Yours, The Red Forest

This autumn Love Lundell will present a new series of work in the exhibition Sentimentally Yours, Red Forest at Wetterling Galllery. The series is about times of transition, the period between childhood and adulthood. Memories of sexual awakening and places connected to these memories. Or the emotion of being trapped in this stage of transition.

Love Lundell’s collaged paintings, drawings and prints unfold in their own world. Dreamlike, mystical and surreal, yet also anchored in the everyday, his evocative scenes draw the viewer in and hold them back simultaneously. Employing a collage technique, Lundell creates his intriguing wonderlands by sampling images from various sources and recontextualizing them to suggest a hallucinatory inner reality. He draws on his childhood memories, dreams, books and the internet for inspiration. Where his early works were densely packed with detail, calling to mind a curio shop, his recent series comprises more pared down, atmospheric compositions imbued with intense colours. Lundell was born in Stockholm in 1981 and attended Trondheim Academy of Fine Art, Norway. He lives and works in Stockholm.

All Disco Dance Must End In Broken Bones

With a wry and darkly humorous title lent from Whale’s 1998 indie album, All Disco Dance Must End In Broken Bones, presents as a group exhibition about gaining traction and accelerating to live your “best life”. Be it that this need for speed is to go ”all in” to pursue your intrinsic urges and desires hedonistically, or question being rather of truthful self-realization to be who you are and want to be, at the end of the day. Possessing often an immediate depictive quality, the works are layered, connoting directly to one thing at face value, while each being informed by a specific narrative of their own that go beyond what is seen at glance.

Participating in the group exhibition are Gethin Wyn Jones, Seroconversion, Philip Dufva, Carla Garlaschi, Karon Nilzén Jonsson and Theodor Ander. The group exhibition is curated by C-print.

ice screening kungsträdgården Stockholm film festival

Stockholm Internatinonal Film Festival is arranging a Winter Cinema at an ice screen in Kungsträdgården, during the weekend November 9-10. The actress Rosanna Arquette opens the Winter Cinema, November 9th at 4:00 pm, as the sun sets over Stockholm. The event is free with the purpose of screening quality cinema to the wider audience. The ice is harvested from Torneälven in Jukkasjärvi and weighs 6 tons.

    – Ten years ago, we created an unforgettable moment for the Stockholmers when Susan Sarandon visited the festival and opened the world’s first ice screen at our 20th Anniversary. This year, we treat everyone on a sparkling cinematic experience, and my only worry is that the ice screen will melt because of all cinema-love that will be spread by the audience in Kungsträdgården, says Git Scheynius, Festival Director at Stockholm Film Festival.

November 9-10 the fountain in Kungsträdgården will transform into a movie theatre with lined up benches that the public can enjoy the screenings on. The films that will be screened is After Hours (1985) and The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993). The audience is encouraged to bring warm clothes and blankets to sit on.

The 6 000 tons heavy blocks of ice have been transported 1227 kilometers, from Tornälven in Jukkasjärvi. The construction of the ice screen starts November 9th, 5:00 am.

Dates and time schedule for the Winter Cinema:

Saturday, November 9th at 4:00 pm
After Hours (1985) Rosanna Arquette opens the ice screen

Sunday, November 10th at 4:00 pm

    Avishai Cohen trio jazz Stockholm

    Avishai Cohen Trio

    Concert time: 20:00
    Doors 19:00

    —–
Israeli world bassist and composer Avishai Cohen returns to Stockholm along with a newly released record and new trio! This time for a unique concert in one of the most pleasing stages in the city, Berwaldhallen.

From the moment the Israeli bassist Avishai Cohen comes on stage, you feel an endless amount of energy, a rare stillness and a unique dynamic. Everything exists at the same time, enriched with an unflinching smile and a playfulness that you rarely encounter in music at this level. There are sparks coming from the music, you can almost see and feel them!

For over 20 years, the bassist, singer, composer and band leader Avishai Cohen has become one of the world’s most esteemed musicians and composers. As a member of the Chick Corea trio, he was soon recognised globally and at the same time began touring in his own name and releasing proprietary music.

Avishai Cohen has created strong ties to Sweden over the years from his big breakthrough at the Stockholm Jazz & Blues Festival 2006 at Skeppsholmen to full club plays, concert halls and festivals. Now he releases the album Arvoles, the 17th album under his own name, recorded in his favourite studio Nilento in Gothenburg. Arvoles means trees in Ladino (an ancient language spoken by the Sephardic people from the diaspora) and the album is a fantastic proof of the musical signature Cohen worked out over the years, unique and lyrical jazz with great splashes of folk music from his home country but also from other parts of the world.
