Five Free Things to Do for Valentine’s Day

Romantic dinner, jewellery, roses…Valentine’s Day can be a great way to break the bank, we know. But it doesn’t have to be. We’ve got a treasure trove of free ways to celebrate!

Valentine’s Lunch Beat

YLC tried out the Lunch Beat last year and you can read about our experience here. But now it’s time for the special V-day edition – a unique collaboration between Lunch Beat, Silent Disco, and Stockholm Central Station. Using dark fabric Lunch Beat will build a secluded “dance box” in Central Station, which will be lit with disco lights. If that doesn’t sound crazy enough, add wireless headphones and DJ broadcasts – meaning only participants can hear the beat. The rest of Stockholm won’t have a clue what’s going on.  Not only is the event free, but if you’re one of the first 100 to show up then you also get free lunch from a loval vendor. Definitely our favourite event for Valentine’s, and singles are of course welcome!

When: Friday, February 14th, 12:00 – 13:00
Where: Stockholm Central Station

Moderna Museet

The prestigious Moderna Museet has free entrance for all on Valentine’s Day, with free guided tours and workshops as well! Gabriel Orozco’s exhibit “Natural Motion” also opens on Friday, and the artist himself will be there speaking to the curator about the exhibit. There’s a workshop about love letters, and a “singles tour” of the exhibit Dance Machines. And from 17:00 on the bar will be open!

When: Friday, February 14th, first event starts 13:00, see schedule here
Where: Moderna Museet

Donate Blood

Every year the Ericsson Globe lights up red on Valentine’s Day. But it’s not a symbol of romantic love between partners. It’s a symbol of pure selfish love – giving blood. It’s a symbol of thanks to all the heroes who donate blood to those in need. So why not celebrate Valentine’s the truly selfless way? The Blood Bus, a portable donation center, will be at the Ericsson Globe on Friday for all those who wish to participate. Do it alone, with a friend, or a partner!

When: Friday, February 14th, from 10:00 to 14:00 the bus will be there
Where: Ericsson Globe

Valentine’s Party at Södra Sällskapet

Party it up with friends the tried-and-true way: with cocktails and dancing until dawn. (Or at least until the bar closes.) You do haev to pay for cocktails of course, but entrance is free to this passionate dance party. The drinks and menu are all made up special for Valentine’s Day, and love promises to be in the air!

When: Friday, February 14th, 21:00 – 01:00
Where: Södra Sällskapet, Åsögatan 111, Södermalm

Talk about Art and Politics

Don’t want to succumb to the commercialism of romantic Valentine’s Day? Prefer something more substantial? This one’s for you. Politicians and artists alike will be at Kulturhuset talking about the cultural and artistic challenges political parties are facing, and how a cultural society can be an alternative to a consumer society and all of its environmental problems. Speakers include Gustav Fridolin, Cecilia Magnusson, Jonas Sjöstedt, Ulf Nilsson, and more.

When: Friday, February 14th, 13:00
Where: Studio 3, Third floor of Kulturhuset, Sergels torg, Stockholm
