GEN(I)US AMANITA – the healing mushroom

Amanita phalloides, also known as the death cap, is the world’s most toxic mushroom. It contains alpha-amanitin which is responsible for causing liver and kidney failure. Ingestion of just half a cap can lead to death! The world’s most deadly fungus is common in Sweden. This genus is responsible for approximately 95% of the fatalities resulting from mushroom poisoning, with the death cap accounting for about 50% on its own. The most potent toxin present in these mushrooms is α-Amanitin. The genus Amanita contains about 600 species of agarics, including some of the most toxic known mushrooms found worldwide, as well as some well-regarded edible species. But Amanita philloides give them all a bad reputation.

Death Cap is an extreme case and one of its kind among all Amanitas. It is deadly poisonous and can not be considered medically useful. The other species of the Amanita genus do not produce or contain this deadly substance. Many of them are simply edible mushrooms, some others like Amanita muscaria – Fly Agaric (the most popular and the prettiest one is often seen in films, cartoons like Smurfs, or video games like Mario Bros) Amanita pantherina – Panther Cap or Amanita Regalis – Royal Fly Agaric contains many chemical compounds of wide medicinal and phytotherapeutic applications. Laboratory research as well as many personal reports indicate neuroprotective and psychoprotective effects, moreover antibacterial (with impact comparable with synthetic antibiotics), antifungal and anti-inflammatory activity were also noted.

Amanita muscaria inspires not only the artist

Here we want to focus on the good and beneficial for our system. Amanita was well known in the shamanic world and has been used in various cultures throughout history. The earliest written reference to the consumption of fungi as a medicine, rather than a food, is within the Sanskrit hymns contained in Rig Veda, which forms a part of the oldest sacred texts of Hinduism, the Vedas. In one of the hymns it is described as an inebriating ritual drink, which was thought to infer divine powers on those who drank it:

“We have drunk Soma and become immortal;

We have attained the light, the Gods discovered.

Now what harm may foeman’s malice do to us?”

Also Viking berserkers may have used it to induce a trance-like state. But historians know very little about the berserkers apart from scattered Old Norse myths and epic sagas. One intriguing hypothesis as to the source of their behaviour is that the berserkers ingested a specific kind of mushroom with psychoactive properties. Some of the more hotly contested hypotheses suggest that the berserkers ingested a hallucinogenic mushroom just before battle to feel immortal.

Muscaria has a distinctly Alice in Wonderland appearance, with its bright red cap and white spots. While it’s technically toxic to humans, the mushrooms are apparently safe to ingest after parboiling them twice or using more advanced methods in modern laboratories.

The research on Amanita still brings new information about the benefits to our health. Some of the producers of the extract recommend it highly as something that can be ingested daily and added to our diet to improve our well-being. It can calm you down and make you more resilient to stress and negative emotions (who doesn’t need it these days?!) “Anxiety and depressive-like states should be suppressed with time as well” – explains Greg – the producer of the Amanita Extract. He says his product is completely organic, eco-friendly and vegan, and most importantly – safe.

“In work with Fly Agaric, Panther Cap or Royal Fly Agaric proper preparation as well as right and reasonable dosage is most important. You may of course eat some fresh or dried mushrooms, but then you will most probably face unpleasant and confusing effects like nausea, stomach ache, dizziness, drowsiness and all other symptoms well known in cases of accidental poisonings. In some regions of Japan, pickled or grilled amanita is a local delicacy. That is why these mushrooms need to go through specific treatment that makes them useful for phytotherapeutics.”

Says Greg and adds that Sweden is one of the biggest importers of the extract.

Amanita Extract used properly may help with personal issues such as emotional insight and self-awareness. The extract used regularly also eases muscular pain and promotes restorative sleep. “It will help you to become more resilient to stress, so If you love to surround yourself with other people’s dramas, throw this bottle away immediately” – the producer jokes. Also, if you’re looking for psychedelic effects – it’s not your elixir.  Amanita Extract is not a drug, and won’t make you trippy or addicted. It’s just a natural way to calm down your nervous system and just feel better and more optimistic.
