YLC’s Christmas Market Picks

With the days getting colder and darker, it’s the perfect time for some glögg and festive cheer from one of the many Christmas markets going on in Stockholm. While the crowds head to the well-known markets at Skansen and Gamla Stan during November and December, we’ve chosen our picks of other wonderful Christmas markets you might not have heard of.

Zeta’s Christmas market

Zeta’s Christmas market is held among the festive pine trees and mistletoe at Zeta’s trädgård, a beautiful garden centre near Kungens Kurva that has an indoor shop, a large outdoor space and a cosy café built into the surrounding rockery.  As well as plenty of Christmas greenery, the market has stalls selling beautiful handmade crafts. Don’t forget to take cash with you, as not all of the sellers accept card.

Where: Zetas Finsmakarens Trädgård, Blombacken 2, 14170 Segeltorp

When: 19-20 November 2016

Finnish Christmas market

The Finnish School hosts a Christmas market with traditional Finnish foods and gifts, including Christmas decorations and handicrafts. There will also be stalls selling Finnish design, books and toys. If you want to try out some Finnish food, we recommend picking up some tasty joulutorttu or karjalanpiirakka. Stockholm artist Amanda Mair will be performing at the market at 12 and 13.

German Christmas bazaar

If you’ve always fancied trying a German Christmas market, head to the German School’s Christmas Bazaar. Held on the same day as the Finnish market, it promises Swedish and German treats, including homemade German breads, plus a tombola and book stall. Children from the school will have their own stalls. The German Christmas bazaar will also feature the traditional German puppet show Kasperle, whose origins date back to the 17th century.

Where: Deutsche Schule Stockholm, Karlavägen 25, 114 31 Stockholm

When: 26 November 2016, 11:00-15:00

You’ll find posters, jewellery, pottery and a range of other unusual arts and crafts. The organisers stress that bringing cash is a good idea and ask that you have a 10 kr coin for the entrance fee. Last year’s market was hugely popular and there were long queues, so check for updates on the Facebook page about the best time to head over there.

Where: Konstfack, LM Ericssons väg 14, 126 37 Stockholm. Telefonplan tunnelbana.
