About the opening film Capernaum:
Capernaum is a city mentioned in the Bible which, according to Jesus, should be condemned to hell. The word is used today as a synonym for chaos, an inferno, a place without peace, mercy, or order. The film's Capernaum takes place in Beirut's very poorest and most vulnerable areas, and is about the 12-year-old boy Zain (Zain Alrafeea) who wants to sue their parents because they put him to this world.

Together with an innumerable number of small siblings, Zain spends the days on Beirut's streets in order to contribute to the family's livelihood in various ways. It's a hard life and Zain dreams of finding a dignified existence, a safe place to take his sister Samar (Cedra Izam). He soon realizes that the worst is about to happen, the parents are planning to marry Samar. Zain knows that only he can save her.

The lead role is called Zain even in reality, a Syrian refugee. It is partly his real life purpose we get to take part in the film. For several years, director Nadine Labaki researched and met vulnerable children in various places in Lebanon - slums, police stations, courtrooms and prisons. Places where children have nothing to say about. The result was a very strong film about how the most vulnerable are affected when the most basic elements of civilization are lacking. Where nothing is sacred, where everything can be stolen, violated and sold.

Labaki wrote history when she, as the first Arab woman, won the prestigious Jury Prize during the Cannes Film Festival. Capernaum has won a number of awards worldwide and is Lebanon's Oscar contribution in 2019.
