Stockholm Art Week 2026 has opened at Moderna Museet. Discover the best exhibitions, galleries and art events to visit across Stockholm this week.
Stockholm’s art scene stepped into the spotlight last night as Stockholm Art Week 2026 officially opened its doors with an inaugural evening at Moderna Museet — one of the city’s most iconic spaces for modern and contemporary art.
Set on the island of Skeppsholmen, surrounded by water and spring light slowly stretching into the evening, the museum welcomed invited guests from across the art world — artists, curators, collectors, and cultural voices — all gathering to mark the beginning of one of the most inspiring weeks in Stockholm’s cultural calendar.
The opening, held on April 20, sets the tone for a city-wide celebration of art running from April 21 to 26, where Stockholm transforms into a vibrant network of exhibitions, gallery openings, installations and conversations. Stockholm Art Week 2026 brings together museums, institutions, independent spaces and galleries, offering a unique snapshot of contemporary art in the city today.
With welcoming speeches by Gitte Ørskou and Lars Strannegård, Director and chairman of Moderna respectively, alongside representatives from art fairs such as Market Art Fair and Supermarket Art Fair, the evening offered an inspiring introduction to some of the week’s artistic highlights. The speakers also reflected on the role of art in Sweden — a country that deeply values and actively seeks out artistic expression. Yet, there remains space for growth in terms of representation. Thanks to expanding initiatives like Stockholm Art Week, both emerging Swedish artists and well-established names are finding new platforms to reach wider audiences and continue pushing the boundaries of the contemporary art scene.

A City in Full Creative Bloom
There is something particularly special about experiencing art in Stockholm this time of year. As the city awakens from winter, creativity seems to spill into every corner — from established museums to hidden gallery spaces.
Stockholm Art Week 2026 is not just a series of exhibitions, but a collective moment where the entire art ecosystem comes together. Over these days, visitors can move seamlessly between institutions, discover emerging artists, and engage in conversations that reflect the ideas shaping our time.
Exhibitions & Highlights to Explore
If you’re wondering where to begin, here are some of the highlights we recommend adding to your art itinerary this week:
Fotografiska — Lotta Antonsson: I Am Everything
One of the standout exhibitions during the week, this show explores identity, memory and representation through collage, photography and sculptural installations. Antonsson’s work moves between decades, using archival imagery from the 60s and 70s to question how visual culture continues to shape the way we see ourselves today.

STANCE Gallery
For those who enjoy discovering more cutting-edge work, this contemporary gallery presents artists whose practices are bold, experimental and conceptually driven. A perfect stop if you want to explore the more underground and forward-thinking side of Stockholm’s art scene.
Moderna Museet — Ongoing Exhibitions
While visiting the opening venue, take time to explore the museum’s current exhibitions and its outstanding collection, featuring works by artists such as Picasso, Dalí and Matisse. Among the ongoing exhibitions you will find ‘Brassaï: Secret signs of Paris‘ – Brassaï is one of the most famous photographers in the history of photography. In the early 1930s, he took his camera on long night walks through Paris. It is around this treasure trove of images that the exhibition “Brassaï – The Secret Signs of Paris” revolves, with over 160 black and white photographs. ‘But also Carsten Höller: Stockholm Slides‘ – A large-scale artwork installed on the facade of Moderna Museet. Stockholm Slides consists of two parallel, spiral slides that run from the museum’s roof down to Slupskjulsvägen. Go up, go down and experience art in a whole new way!
A sneak peek of House of Nisaba set to open in May was also presented at the opening of this year’s Stockholm Art Week. “House of Nisaba: New Stories of Painting” signals a return to figurative painting in contemporary art, through the lens of allegory. The exhibition highlights 29 international artists, of whom 25 are commissioned to make a new painting especially for this occasion. What does painting look like and mean today as knowledge transforms, information accelerates and societies splinter? What stories are these artists telling us?
The museum itself is a cornerstone of Stockholm’s cultural identity and remains one of the best places to immerse yourself in modern and contemporary art.

A Week to Get Lost in Art
What makes Stockholm Art Week 2026 so special is the freedom it offers. There is no single path to follow — instead, the city becomes your gallery. One moment you might be standing in front of a large-scale installation in a museum, and the next discovering a small exhibition tucked inside a quiet street on Södermalm. It’s this contrast between the monumental and the intimate that defines Stockholm’s art scene.
Here is the map of Stockholm Art Week’s different venues so you can get lost and find yourself through art:

Whether you are deeply immersed in the art world or simply curious, this is one of the best moments of the year to experience Stockholm through a creative lens. So take a walk, step into a gallery, follow your curiosity and let the city surprise you.
