ART EXHIBITION: HAPPINESS SCORE

Sōdermalm based gallery – Studio 44 opened a new art exhibition last Friday – video installations by Katarzyna Piorek. Born in Poland, Katarzyna moved to Stockholm 11 years ago. She completed her education at the University of Arts in Poznan and at Stockholm University of Art. As a visual artist, she works with classic media: painting, drawings, film installations and animations. Her interests are based on mixing classical media with different art forms and creating a new dimension of artistic expression. She is one of the artists who run Studio 44, located in a unique place: Kapsylen, a cultural collective in an old factory.

“I focused on invisible problems by attempting to illustrate the burdens of the human condition. Through a series of interviews, I correlated personal experiences with collective emotional conflicts, compromises, and struggles of those balanced between two worlds, across borders, new in an unknown country, as a way to highlight the global fate of female immigrants. Moving forward, I have been observing and investigating the assimilation of the newcomer into new – unknown society, culture through the Jante law perspective, questioning how to “score points of happiness” for an immigrant, who is a stranger in the society with no sense of belonging” comments Piorek on her motives to create her art.
