Fashionable Stockholm: Korova by Mayla

Attracting the international fashion community and buyers from across the globe, Fashion Week puts Swedish designers front and center.

In Northern Europe Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week has become one of the most important fashion weeks, with more than thirty Swedish designers showing twice a year. The main venues are held at the Berns in central Stockholm and at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Pavilion.

The Mayla label was founded by Swedish graphic designer Marlene Abraham in 2010. The Korova collection went down a storm with its series of eye-catching designs influenced by Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange”. Contrasting colour sets and fabrics re-imagined the dystopian theme of the movie.

The show opened up with an all black silk suit and continued with a white top/black pant set. Distinctive colour contrasts were one of the many reasons this show stood out.  Black and white shift dresses alongside unique deep purple/black shift dresses were the highlights of the show. Keeping the patterns simple and elegant the designer had maintained  the highly stylised theme. Exposed zippers, which are seen more and more on the runways these days, were another feature that made this show shine. The deceptively simple shift dresses were followed by a stunning deep-purple and velvet silk suit, pant suit and then, more shift dresses. There were also a series of skirts and jackets, again with the distinctive simple yet elegant vibe.

Metal lamé fabrics were another outstanding feature of the Mayla 2014 winter collection. Gold/silver lamé skirts, jackets, coats mixed with black or white tops, along with the ubiquitous shift dresses made the Korova collection an exceptional treat for the gathered fashion lovers.  The styling also kept to that theme, with hair worn down and loose and the makeup muted.  Opaque black stockings finished off the looks, worn with simple black ankle boots, which we’ve seen for a few seasons already but don’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon.
