Stockholm Design Week to Showcase the Best Interior Design Trends for 2024

If you’re looking for inspiration to spruce up your living spaces, make plans to check out Stockholm Design Week, an annual leisure event that highlights the latest architecture and home design trends. This year, the event will run from Feb. 5-11 and will feature installations, exhibitions, open showrooms, and fairs. The second part of SDW will take place in September, with the dates to be announced within the coming weeks. One of the main draws of the event is the Stockholm Furniture Fair, which will take place from Feb. 6-10. If you’re planning to give your home a makeover, make sure to drop by since you’ll see different types of lighting, furniture, fabrics, and home tech from more than 100 brands.

Stockholm Design Week aims to push the design industry forward, and just like in previous years, professionals and enthusiasts alike will get a glimpse of the best interior design trends at the seven-day event. Last year’s SDW showed what’s about to be hot in the world of home design in 2024– here’s a recap of the anticipated interior design trends that will likely show up in modern homes in Stockholm and in major cities around the world.

Metallic Finishes and Furniture

People all over the world have fallen in love with Scandinavian interior design as it features a mix of old and new design elements that radiates cosiness and warmth. This is the reason why mega retailer IKEA continues to be popular among home design enthusiasts, and why people keep purchasing and recommending their products. According to the brand’s senior designer Abbey Stark, Scandinavian design focuses on creating a sense of wellbeing for everyone. “We’re trying to give people happy homes,” she says in an interview with The Zoe Report. “Our vision is to create a better everyday life for the many.”

Comfort, minimalism, and quiet elegance are the hallmarks of Scandinavian design, and it’s why natural materials, such as wood are typically used for this. But in 2024, expect to see more metal finishes in homes as it was prominently featured in last year’s SDW showrooms. Bright and antique metals are some of the most unique design elements in interior design these days, so having these in your home will surely give it a unique look that will stand the test of time. Expect to see things like floating metal shelves in silver or rose gold, metal bookcases, and wooden tables with metal legs and accents in interior design shops this year.

Furniture in an Array of Cheerful Colors

When people think about Scandinavian design, what comes to mind are furniture and decor in clean shades of white or cream, with just a teeny drop of colour to liven things up a little. But this year, expect to see home furnishings in vivid colours as experts predict that more people in Stockholm and other leading cities will be decorating for happiness and wellbeing.

At SDW, brands like Hem showcased outdoor furniture in sunny yellow and ultramarine blue, as well as ottomans in mint, pink, ochre, and red. Meanwhile, Lammhults, which is another Swedish brand that will be featured in this year’s Stockholm Furniture Fair, is about to unveil a new collection that includes a modular seating series, a trolley, and a chair in bold colours. Last year, the brand made a splash with their Bau collection, a modular seating series in eye-catching shades of cherry red, bright blue, and forest green.

Furniture as Art

Scandinavian design usually features quiet botanical prints or monochrome paintings to enhance the minimalistic look of living spaces. However, experts at Stockholm Design Week predict that there’s going to be a big shake up as collectible design, or furniture as art, is likely to be popular this year. Frederik Paulsen’s red spiral table is one such example of this, as well as Laurids Gallee’s Aquapalette, a console table/chair made with aqua-coloured glass. There’s also Friends & Founders’ Knockout Collection, which features solid aluminum tabletops balanced on heavy marble that’s shaped like spheres, cubes, and triangles. All these pieces are sure to add interest to any home as they give a contemporary touch to any decor scheme.

Stockholm Design Week is the place to be, whether you’re a design enthusiast or a homeowner who wants to refresh your living spaces. Be on the lookout for the latest trends from the event, and see how they enhance and modernize Scandinavian interior design.
