What’s on and Where to Go in Stockholm: January

Whether you’ve got January blues and need cheering up or whether you’re excited to see what the new year will unfold for you, Stockholm is sure to not disappoint. From Picasso to David LaChapelles, The Hives to Plácido Domingo, dresses from Downton to motorcycles, there’s a huge variety of things to see and do.

MC Mässan

Sweden’s largest motorcycle show has everything to do with motorbikes, scooters and mopeds with demonstrations, test tracks and much more. We also invite visitors to a show with spectacular jumps, fire and smoke. The artists are renowned athletes, top-ranked in the extreme, and they show off their skills to specially composed live music. Prices of tickets include entrance to Stockholm Lifestyle Motor Show at the same venue.

A Day in the World: Photography Exhibition at Kulturhuset

On May 15 2012, people across the globe took a photograph of their daily lives – home, work, culture, food and community. The exhibition presents 460 images by 431 photographers from 80 countries across all continents. A Day in the World can be seen as a continuation of the project and exhibition “A Day in Sweden” which was shown at the Culture 2003. Although it is not even ten years ago, much has happened – not least through the increased use of mobile phones as cameras. Every fifth picture in the exhibition was taken with a mobile phone.

David LaChapelles: Burning Beauty at Fotografiska

David LaChapelles is best known for his glamorous and absurd pictures from the world of fashion, celebrities and models. Fotografiska is showing Lachapelles largest exhibition ever: Burning Beauty, which includes more than 250 works, music videos and film. It is the first, and probably the only time, that Fotografiska fills the whole house with one artist for over three months.

When: ends on Sunday 3rd March 2013

Plácido Domingo in Stockholm

One of the most recognized and most influential opera singers of all time, Plácido Domingo will be coming to Stockholm to move us with his beautiful tenor voice. The concert, originally scheduled for December, has been moved due to private commitments and there are still tickets left. Don’t miss your chance to see the great man himself.

The Hives in Concert

The famous Swedish garage rock band perform in their home country, performing in their ever-changing, matching black-and-white suits. The band puts emphasis on their energetic live shows and have been acclaimed by music critics as one of the best live rock bands in current music; it’s your chance to be part of the action. Picasso/Duchamp: “He was wrong” at Moderna Museet

The Modern Art Museum pits the giants Pablo Picasso and Marcel Duchamp against each other for the first time in Stockholm. They are often seen as the most influential artists of the 1900s: Picasso, the painter with magic hands who came to personify a modernist painter – Duchamp, the coolly ironic chess genius who questioned painting, turning art into a maze of intellectual games. You can decide for yourself who was wrong or right.

La Cage aux Folles

The critically acclaimed musical is playing in Stockholm!  Based on the 1973 French play of the same name by Jean Poiret, it focuses on a gay couple: Georges, the manager of a Saint-Tropez nightclub, and Albin, his romantic partner and star attraction, and the farcical adventures that ensue when Georges’s son, Jean-Michel, brings home his fiancée’s ultra-conservative parents to meet them.

August: A Devilish Exhibition

Sweden’s national bard, presented in a different way! Liljevalchs’ major exhibition about August Strindberg as a man, artist, playwright, debater and alchemist. You are welcome to browse round twelve dramatized rooms with moods and themes from his world and works, designed by Ulla Kassius. The exhibition will include twice-weekly performances of Strindberg’s plays by actors and directors from the Stockholm City Theatre.

Epiphany Concert at St Jacob’s Church

Performed by th St. Jacob’s Youth Choir and directed by Mikael Wedar. A program inspired by the three wise men. Traditional Christmas music mixed with noises from some of this century’s most gifted composers. 1 hour long.

Dress from Downton Exhibition at Hallwylska Museum from 5th October

A new exhibition on the costumes from the popular period drama. It explores the costumes and lifestyle of the upper and lower classes of society during the early 1900s. If you caught the Christmas episode and want to relive all the moments, this is the place for you!

When: Until 6th January. Open from 12:00 to 16:00 Tuesdays – Sundays. Open until 19:00 Wednesday.
