Stockholm Open Air Gigs: July/August

Live music can be at it’s most magical when you experience it in the open air on a warm summer evening. Here are our best picks of the summer for creating music memories in Stockholm…

Popaganda in the park

Popaganda teams up with Parkteatern to bring some lovely music to Djurgården on the 19th of July. One day, one park, one stage – and plenty of fresh new Swedish artists for you to discover. Headlined by the wonderful Naomi Pilgrim, who brings her fantastically soulful voice with electro sounds and heavy drum beats. And of course it’s free like the rest of Parkteatern’s repertoire.

Where: Galärparken, Djurgården
When: 19th July, 15:00 to 22:00

Elefanten Street Food Park

The very central but mostly very deserted Brunkebergs torg is right behind Gallerian and Sergels torg. The city wants to bring some life to the place in the summer, so they’ve opened a park with a food stand and different street food trucks stopping by. On Saturdays they offer live music, and it’s free entrance of course! Other days you may find DJs behind the turntables. Be sure to catch Marlene on the 19th of July.

Where: Brunkebergstorg
When: Summer Saturdays from 16:00 – Marlene on 19th July at 18:30

Gröna Lund concerts

Gröna Lund has filled their whole season with lots of concerts, which can all be seen at the very reasonable price of 240 SEK for their Green Card. There’s plenty on offer for every taste, but if you want our recommendations for the very best of what remains in the program this summer, be sure not to miss Miriam Bryant, Tove Lo and Ace Wilder! Also Saturday evening’s live TV show Sommarkrysset may very well be worth seeing as they bring out several artists every week, including international ones. See their listing here.

Where: Gröna Lund, Djurgården
When: Miriam Bryant  22nd July, 20:00
Tove Lo  4th August, 20:00
Ace Wilder  11th August, 20:00

 The Feminist Summer Gala

This impressive line-up of women is brought together for the Feminist Initiative Party (Feministiskt Initiativ), who are hoping to gain momentum in their bid for parliament – on stage are some of the most talented and outspoken Swedish female artists including Jenny Wilson, Frida Hyvönen and Silvana Imam. The tickets are 330 SEK (which goes to support the anti-racist, pro-feminist movement).

Where: Södra Teatern terrace, Mosebacke
When: 11th August, 19:00-22:00

Kulturfestivalen

Stockholm’s annual Culture Festival fills the city with all kinds of cultural activities, including some excellent music. The one you absolutely can’t miss is Manu Chao, who will bring his contagious charm and infectious grooves to Gustav Adolfs Torg on August 15th. Another top tip is the wonderful Jennie Abrahamson, who has last been seen touring the world with Peter Gabriel. She plays Brunkebergs torg on the 14th.

Where: Around Stockholm, main stages Gustaf Adolfs torg and Brunkebergs torg
When: 12th to 17th August

We are STHLM

Parallel with the Culture Festival, the younger Stockholmers get their own festival at Kungsträdgården. The best music of this festival is on offer on Saturday the 16th August, when we get to see three wonderfully talented young female artists take over the stage: Beatrice Eli, Marlene and Miriam Bryant – starting at around eight o’clock in the evening. This is where the youngsters are expected to gather on the last weekend before school starts. It’s all free, of course.

The highlights on this year’s line-up include Lily Allen, Kelis and London Grammar as well as Veronica Maggio, First Aid Kit, Icona Pop, NONONO and Nicole Sabouné. The tickets are 750 SEK for both days and 495 SEK for one day.

Rix FM Festivalen

The radio channel Rix FM had made it a tradition to tour the country with their summer festival, bringing along both Swedish and international artists who get to showcase their talents with a few songs each. The Stockholm festival this year has names like Darin, Zara Larsson, John Martin as well as Ella Henderson from the UK, who recently got a number one hit with her debut single “Ghost”. It’s all free and there are other activities in the park already from 12 o’clock.
