Christmas markets: Six of the best in 2015

With the days getting colder and darker, it’s the perfect time for some glögg and festive cheer from one of the many Christmas markets going on in Stockholm. While the crowds head to the well-known markets at Skansen and Gamla Stan during November and December, we’ve chosen six wonderful Christmas markets that you might not have heard of.

  1. Zeta’s Christmas market

Zeta’s Christmas market is held among the festive pine trees and mistletoe at Zeta’s trädgård, a beautiful garden centre near Kungens Kurva that has an indoor shop, a large outdoor space and a cosy café built into the surrounding rockery.  As well as plenty of Christmas greenery, the market has stalls selling beautiful handmade crafts. Don’t forget to take cash with you, as not all of the sellers accept card.

Where: Zetas Finsmakarens Trädgård, Blombacken 2, 14170 Segeltorp

When: 21-22 November 2015

  1. Finnish Christmas market

The Finnish School hosts a Christmas market with traditional Finnish foods and gifts, including Christmas decorations and art. There will also be stalls selling books and toys, where money will be donated to the Red Cross, plus the Finnish-language radio channel Sisuradio will be organising singalongs during the day. If you want to try out some Finnish food, we recommend picking up some tasty joulutorttu or karjalanpiirakka.

Where: Sverigefinska skolan, Fridhemsgatan 17-19, 11240 Stockholm,

When: 28 November 2015

  1. German Christmas bazaar

If you’ve always fancied trying a German Christmas market, head to the German School’s Christmas Bazaar. Held on the same day as the Finnish market, it promises Swedish and German treats, including homemade German breads, plus a tombola and book stall. Children from the school will have their own stalls and 20% of the money made will go to the organisation Gamcin, which helps children attend school in Gambia. The German Christmas bazaar will also feature the traditional German puppet show Kasperle, whose origins date back to the 17th century.

Where: Deutsche Schule Stockholm, Karlavägen 25, 114 31 Stockholm

When: 28 November 2015

Konstfack Christmas market

  1. Konstfack Christmas market

Stockholm’s most creative Christmas market is organised by the students at the art and design school Konstfack. You’ll find posters, jewellery, pottery and a range of other unusual arts and crafts. The organisers stress that bringing cash is a good idea and ask that you have a 10 kr coin for the entrance fee. Last year’s market was hugely popular and there were long queues, so check for updates on the Facebook page about the best time to head over there.

Where: Konstfack, LM Ericssons väg 14, 126 37 Stockholm. Telefonplan tunnelbana.

When: 28-29 November 2015

  1. Drottningholm palace Christmas market

Okay, so Drottningholm is a bit of a trip from Stockholm, but it’s so wonderful that it had to be on the list. Held on the first weekend in December, Drottningholm Palace’s Christmas market focuses on traditional Swedish handicrafts, made from wood, straw and other textiles, as well as Christmas foods like cheeses, hams and mustards. You can even combine the market with a tour of the palace and Christmas activities for children.

Filmstaden offers a Christmas market in classic film style, held in the building where film greats such as Greta Garbo and Ingmar Bergman started their careers. As well as market stalls selling arts and crafts, there will be guided tours, film screenings and live performances. The day of the Christmas market is St Lucia’s day, so be sure to look out for traditional Lucia festivities, too.
